This letter was written by Vrgil to his father. Markham is still in Mexico. Virgil is glad his father has taken resposibility for the Poe items. Virgil asks if Markham should go to Chicago to edit Muse. Discusses painting the house. Anne asks about Edwin. Virgil thinks that telling Straub that Macys book alreeady used the Poe article may have been to far. Refers to Ernest Heimway's Death in the Afternoon.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
